About Kandestøberiet/”The Tinkery”

Kandestøberiet (or “The Tinkery” in English) was conceived as a blog site for anyone with interest in and opinions about politics, society, culture and philosophy. The name of the site is a reference to the 1722 comedy, “The Political Tinker” (“Den Politiske Kandestøber“) by Norwegian playwright Ludvig Holberg. The titular character, a tinker by profession, is full of self-confident political analyses and ideas for how to do things better than the actual politicians in charge. At the end of the play, however, he concludes,

To take the leading statesman’s part, is harder far than sneering, for squinting at a seaman’s chart, is not the whole of steering: With books on politics at hand, a dolt may criticise, but judging right our fatherland, is only for the wise.

This site is for the many addicts of news, politics and society, who feel the same way as Holberg’s tinker. We sit at home and at bars, peddling our analyzes and thinking that all the world’s challenges could easily be solved, if only just…

All of the tinkers at Kandestøberiet run their own blogs. There’s no editorial board, and each author is responsible for his or her own content, topics and style within certain, broadly defined guidelines. For instance, we stress that blog posts should contain some sort of opinion on something rather than a mere diary. As one Tinker put it, “we don’t care about your latest meal, your recent summer trip or your new jeans. However, we’d gladly read about your opinion on organic food, the state of airline competition or new trends within fashion subcultures.” Anyone is welcome to join the Tinkery. Simply contact us with a few lines about yourself, we’ll send you the guidlines and set you up in the factory.

In the Tinkery, there’s always room for one more…
